The Open Call for DESIGN Kuopio Residency Programme 2022 is open!
The DESIGN Kuopio Residency provides designers time and space to focus on their production or research and pedagogical experience through teaching workshops at Kuopio Academy of Design.
The Residency Program is connected to Kuopio Academy of Design’s basic studies curriculum, themed around the history of Finnish design from the Stone Age to the Future. The 2022 semester is dedicated to Finnish Postmodernism and its extravagant vibes in design. The Designer in residence is expected to give a workshop for our basic studies groups in Children’s, Teens’, Adults’ and online Design Academies according to the project proposal which should be suitable for the fall 2022 theme.
The DESIGN Kuopio Residency Open Call is open for four different designers/artists. We are looking for a designer who specializes in
FASHION/clothing design from August 29 – September 4
FURNITURE/chairs from September 26 – October 2
ADVERTISEMENT/stop-motion animation from October 24 – 30
KINETIC SCULPTURE/mobiles from November 14 – 20
The designer in residence is expected to give workshops from Monday to Thursday for a one week period of time as follows:
• Children’s Design Academy for 7–9 year olds on Monday at 5–7.30 pm
• Online Design Academy on Tuesday at 10–12.30 am
• Children’s Design Academy for 10–12 year olds on Tuesday at 5–7.30 pm
• Adults’ Design Academy on Wednesday at 5–8 pm
• Teen’s Design Academy on Thursday at 4.30–7 pm
The DESIGN Kuopio Residency apartment is located in a contemporary apartment building next to the Kuopio Academy of Design. It is suitable also for a designer couple or two designers, if you want to apply as a team. Even a family residency is possible. The selected designer is in charge of his/her own traveling, working and living expenses during the residency period. Hourly based wages are paid for lectures, workshops and feedback studios. The residency apartment fee is 240 €/week, 660 €/month, including a shared studio space in the Kuopio Academy of Design’s beautiful, historic office building.

The DESIGN Kuopio Residency apartment is located on the 1st floor in the neighborhood of Academy of Design. The size of the residency apartment is 41 squares and it comprises a living quarters (small bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, balcony). The apartment is suitable also for a designer couple or two designers, if you want to apply as a group. Even a family residency is possible. Residency apartment fee is 240 €/week, 660 €/month, including shared studio in the Academy of Design.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Workshop structure is based on the basic studies curriculum. We offer equipment for workshops. Our teachers are helping the Residency Designer in workshops, PR and local contacts. We offer an open workspace.

Shared studio and open workspace in Kuopio Academy of Design’s beautiful office building nearby forests and lakes.
Fees and support
Residency apartment fee is 240 €/week, 660 €/month, including shared studio in the Academy of Design. Selected designer pays costs of his/hers traveling and working as well as living expenses during residency period. We pay the designer hourly based wage about lectures, workshops and feedback studios 30 €/hour which is agreed with a designer separately.
