In the framework of Future Materials, the Jan van Eyck Academie is accepting applications for two research fellowships, supported by InnovatieLab – a programme by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and CLICKNL commissioned by the Ministry of Culture (NL).
The goal of the Future Materials Research Fellowships is to support the development of two existing sustainable – natural or circular – material projects. The selected projects shall feature a material or material process, which can be applicable in a broad range of creative processes and/or offer a viable alternative to common toxic or not easily recyclable fossil-based materials used in arts and design (epoxy resins, fossil-based polymers, plaster, inks, pigments, and others).
Future Materials at the Jan van Eyck Academie aims to support environmentally conscious art and design practices by conducting research and disseminating knowledge on sustainable non-toxic materials. The long-term programme promotes sustainable alternatives to fossil-based or toxic materials commonly used in the arts and design with the aim to foster ecologically mindful approaches in these two creative fields.
The two selected candidates will be offered the opportunity to develop their projects with the expertise and facilities of the Jan van Eyck Academie, Brightlands Chemelot Campus, CHILL – Chemelot Innovation and Learning Labs, and Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London.
The two selected candidates will also have the opportunity to spend part of their fellowship at Central Saint Martins UAL (CSM) in London. There, they will have the opportunity to exchange insights and knowledge about their research with the CSM community of professors, researchers, and students of the MA Material Futures course.

Jan van Eyck will help the candidates to find an accommodation in Maastricht.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Working in close proximity with the Jan van Eyck participants will provide the two research fellows with insights into the daily complexities of the transition towards sustainable materials. The two research fellows will be invited to embed this enhanced understanding in the development of their material projects, with the support of the Future Materials Lab, other labs of the academy – Material Matters, Printing & Publishing, Photography & Audiovisual, Food Lab, – and the Jan van Eyck Library.
During their fellowships, the two selected candidates will also have the possibility to access to the expertise and facilities of CHILL and Brightlands Chemelot Campus. Located few kilometers from Maastricht and reachable by public transport, Brightlands Chemelot Campus is a research hub where scientists, engineers, students work on new circular materials and design processes. The two fellows will have the possibility to discuss their projects with the experts at Brightlands, and to use the facilities of their labs when needed.
The results of the two research fellowships will be presented during the Jan van Eyck Open Studios 2023. The format of the presentation will be discussed with the Jan van Eyck during the course of the two fellowship periods. The two projects will eventually be included in the Future Materials Bank.

Fees and support
The selected candidates will receive access to a private studio, a monthly stipend of € 2000 and a working budget of € 2000.
