Residency for Europe- and Wales-based writers in minoritised languages

About Literature Wales

Literature Wales is a registered charity (no. 1146560) and the national company for the development of literature. Our vision is a Wales where literature empowers, improves and brightens lives.

We facilitate, fund, and directly deliver a literary programme across Wales. Our work includes inspiring communities through participation in literature, developing the skills and talents of writers, and celebrating Wales’ literary culture.

To deliver these, we have identified three priorities to focus our work and investment, which aim to create positive change in society through literature:

  • Representation & Equality: addressing historical and structural inequalities in the sector and platforming diverse voices
  • Health & Well-being: using the healing power of literature to support the well-being of our nation
  • Climate Emergency: using the creative power of words to educate, challenge and inspire long-term change
Literature Wales is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and we are also grateful to the many trusts and foundations, individuals and companies whose generosity makes our programme of work possible. We work in Welsh, English and bilingually across Wales, and our offices are in Llanystumdwy and Cardiff.

Call for writers

Literature Wales is inviting applications from Welsh or another minoritised language authors to join international writers on a two-week creative writing residency at Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre between 17 and 31 May 2025.

Nine writers will be selected from Europe, and five from Wales.

The organisers do not expect or request set outputs by the end of the residency. The aim is to offer writers the opportunity to write, reflect and build an international creative community. This will hopefully lead to the creation of several radical creative international collaborations in endangered languages and the sharing of solutions and ideas across Europe. Celebratory events offering an opportunity to share creative work and learning will be organised as part of the retreat at Hay Festival.

There will be opportunities to receive paid work as a facilitator during the fortnight to deliver a session with the group and/or to take part in a celebratory and sharing event in Hay Festival.
